In March, the snowmelt is disappearing, and the wetness of the
desert concentrates in little pools. The crust of the earth after moisture
leaves gorgeous, living patterns in the soil. Spring draws a new picture for
our desert walks, and leaves a feeling of lightness in the body.
The sun brings longer days and opportunities to
meander pathways both far and close to home—

shades of stone white, fossil, and twilight, usher in the softness of the
season and new growth. The poet Adrienne Rich writes:
